Sakura Avalon
Japanese Name: Kinomoto Sakura
Name Origin: Japanese, means Cherry Blossom
Sakura is a ten year old fourth grader who loves sports and hates math. She is in the cheerleading squad and though not stupid or wimpy, she is very gullible and is scared of ghosts. One day after school she hears a strange noise from her basement and when she goes to investigate it, discovers a book called the 'Clow'. She opens it and after reading the name of the top card, releases the deck. The cards' guardian, Keroberos, charges her with bringing the cards back and dubs her the 'Cardcaptor'. In the Japanese version she has a gigantic crush on her older brother's best friend Julian (Yukito), this was more downplayed in the dub.

Kero
Japanese Name: Kero-chan
Name Origin: short for Keroberos, also the Japanese homonym for 'ribbit'
The being charged with guarding the Clow Book, he took a thirty year nap and allowed the cards to escape. Because Sakura did not have the most important sun-based cards, Firey and Earthy, he is stuck in a small, more 'travel-size' form. His true form is Keroberos, which he does not achieve until just before the Final Judgement. He is lazy and loves sweets and video games, but always give Sakura the advice she needs to seal the cards.

Madison Taylor
Japanese Name: Daidouji Tomoyo
Name Origin: Japanese, means Lotus Blossom
Sakura's best friend and classmate. She is extremely smart and sly and loves to dress Sakura and Kero up in her homemade outfits and videotape her whenever she goes. She is also extremely rich and her mother owns a large toy company. Later we learn she and Sakura are cousins. In the Japanese version Tomoyo was in love with Sakura and is obsessed with capturing every moment of her life and 'cuteness' on tape.

Li Showron
Japanese Name: Li Shaoran (Syaoran)
Name Origin: Cantonese, Xiao Lang. Means 'small wolf'.
A Chinese foriegn exchange student that transfers to Sakura's class. He came to Japan in order to retrieve the Clow Cards and like Sakura has magic powers. His family is directly related to Clow Reed, the cards' creator and felt entitled to them. He is stubborn and a bit mean, but just as gullible as Sakura. He always fights in his family's robes with his sword and Ofuda (spell tags). In the original version he had what he thought was a crush on Julian(Yukito) and viewed Sakura not only as a rival for the cards, but his affections but later learns the feelings were from an attraction to moon magic and in truth loves Sakura.

Mei Lin Rae
Japanese Name: Li Meilin
Name Origin: Cantonese, means 'beautiful bells' (though sometimes translated as 'beautiful antelope')
A transfer student from Li's home town and is utterly obsessed with him. She actually has no magical powers but tries to help Li capture the cards whenever possible. She always called Kero 'stuffed animal' and is always protective of Li whenever Sakura is around. In the Japanese version she and Li(Shaoran/Syaoran) were actually engaged and were cousins.

Tori Avalon
Japanese Name: Kinomoto Touya
Name Origin: Japanese, means Peach Blossom
Sakura's seventeen year old brother and a high school student. He loves to tease Sakura and calls her 'squirt' (in Japanese he called her 'kaiju' which means 'monster'). He's always getting small part time jobs to help pay for college. He also has the power to see spirits and the spirit world so he often sees his dead mother floating around Sakura. Sakura developed her fear of spirits after Tori would tell her stories of what he saw. He later gives his powers to Yue in order to save his friend Julian's life. In the Japanese version he dated Kaho, though they broke up after she left for England and later fell in love with his best friend Yukito

Julian Star
Japanese Name: Tsukishiro Yukito
Name Origin: Japanese, full name means 'Snow Rabbit of the Moon'
Tori's best friend and another seventeen year old boy. Sakura has a crush on him. He's over very often at Sakura's house because his grandparents travel a lot. Truthfully, he is the earthly form of Yue, the guardian of the moon. In the Japanese version, both Sakura and Li (Shaoran/Syaoran) had a crush on him and he had a gigantic appetite. This was to sustain him as Yue

Layla Mackenzie
Japanese Name: Mizuki Kaho
Name Origin: Japanese, last name means 'full moon'
Sakura and Li's mysterious new math teacher. When she first arrives Li is immediately suspicious of her. Like Sakura and Li, she has magical powers and carries a bell with mysterious powers. She often helps Sakura in capturing the Clow Cards, though pretends to know nothing about it. Kero at first suspects her to be Yue, but in fact she is only associated because she has moon-based powers and the bell originally belonged to Clow Reed. In the Japanese version she was the daughter of the Tsukimine Shrine's caretaker and dated Toya back when she was a student teacher and he was in junior high. They broke up before she left for England where she met and fell in love with Eriol (Eli)

Keroberos
Japanese Name: same as English
Name Origin: Greek, play on the name 'Cerberus' the gate beast of Hades (though not confirmed)
The true form of Kero before the cards escaped. He regained his form after Sakura sealed all the cards (in the manga it was after she captured the Firey). In this form he can shoot fire balls from his mouth and is much stronger, but like his mini-form, he is a lazy glutton

Yue
Japanese Name: same as English
Name Origin: Mandarin, means 'moon'
The celestial, true form of Julian. The Judge of the Clow, his job was to test the Cardcaptor after all the cards were sealed. He at first did not want to give Sakura or Li a chance at the Final Judgement since neither caught all the cards on their own. He eventually gave in, though was very heartless in testing of the two. He is distant, unemotional and pessimistic. When Sakura's magical powers, the food Julian ate and the moon were not enough to sustain his powers, he began to disappear. Since his fate is directly tied to Julian, Tori gave up his powers to Yue to save his life. He at first did not like Sakura and missed Clow Reed terribly. Julian is unable to remember his life as Yue, and is at first unaware of his other side but Yue has full knowledge of Julian's life.

Clow Reed
Japanese Name: same as English
Name Origin: English, play on the name 'Thomas Crowley', a famous English occultist
The creator of the Clow Cards, Keroberos and Yue. A wizard that lived hundreds of years ago, he blended tradition Western magic with Eastern magic and was considered one of the strongest magicians of all time. His mother was Chinese and his father was English. During his life Clow Reed was very eccentric and a bit of heartbreaker. Before his death he sealed the cards away leaving Keroberos and Yue to choose their new master but later reincarnates as Eli Moon.

Eli Moon
Japanese Name: Hiiragazawa Eriol
Name Origin: Japanese, means?
The mysterious new transfer student from England that joins Sakura and Li's class shortly after the Final Judgement. He likes to join with Zachary and make up stories to tell Sakura. In reality, he is the reincarnation of Clow Reed who has come to put Sakura through a series of trials to force her to transform the Clow Cards into Star (Sakura) Cards. In the Japanese version, he often flirted with Sakura to enrage Li(Shaoran/Syaoran) but is actually romantic involved with Kaho. He is also not what he appears to be, despite his childlike appearance, he is in fact much, much older. In the Manga it is explained that he is only the half incarnation of Clow Reed (Clow Reed's spirit was so powerful he chose to split it into to manage his powers) and because Eriol maintained Clow Reed's enormous magic, he would be unable to age until Sakura transformed the cards and transfered part of his magic to Clow Reed's other incarnation, Fujitaka.

Ruby Moon
Japanese Name: Akizuki Naruku
Name Origin: Japanese, full name means 'Crimson Autumn Moon'
A new transfer student at Tori and Julian's school and Eli Moon's older sister. She is obnoxious, domineering and loves to bother Tori and taught Julian. She is in fact Ruby Moon, one of Eli's two guardian beasts. In the Japanese version she actually had no real gender and always interrupted Toya when he was about to confess his true feelings to Yukito. She also hung around Touya to drain his magic

Spinner
Japanese Name: Suppi
Name Original: Short for Japanese phonetic version of his name 'supineru son'
Eli's other guardian. In his earthly form he looks a lot like Kero except their personalities are completely different. He is much calmer, quiter loves to read and hates sweets. Though when he does eat sugar he becomes super hyper and can't control his actions. Ruby loves to torment him by calling him 'Spinny Baby' though her prefers to be called 'Spinner' or his real name 'Spinner Sun'. In the Japanese version he was called Suppi but also hated that nickname with a passion.

Spinner Sun
Japanese Name: Spinel Sun
Name Origin: English, spinels are bright red gems often confused with rubies, sun because he is the guardian of the sun
The true form of Spinner. He is quite snide and obnoxious but much more powerful than Keroberos. Instead of shooting fireballs he uses a bright red laser for his attacks.

Ruby Moon (true form)
Japanese Name: same as English
Name Origin: English, Rubies are valuable gems from the corundum family, moon because she is the guardian of the moon
Ruby's true appearance and just as annoying as her earthly form. Unlike her moon counterpart Yue, she knows exactly what happens in her life from form to form and uses that information to lord over and confuse Julian when they are at school. In the Japanese versiom, she was actually an 'it' but said she likes to appear female

A college professor and Sakura and Tori's father. In the Japanese version he married their mother when she was in high school and he was a starting teacher. In the manga he was part of Clow Reed's reincarnation |

Nadeshiko was in fact his favorite grandchild and was deeply hurt when she married her teacher, but forgives her and Fujitaka after meeting Sakura |

A twelve year girl who goes to Sakura's school and is on the track team. The Dash card ended up in her backyard and she kept it as a pet, thinking it was a good luck charm. Sakura was reluctant to capture the card after learning of Jesse's attachment to it, but in the end sealed the card anyway. |

The owner of the Twin Bells toy shop. Originally she went from town to town because her stores would constantly be shut down when products people bought went missing. In reality the missing toys were caused by the Jump card and after Sakura sealed it the store went back to normal and stayed in Reedington/Tomoeda. Maggie is extremely kind and nice, but a little accident prone and scatterbrained. In the Japanese version she started a toy shop to keep alive the dream of her dead fiance, a toy designer
